Whilst the sailors of many classes have already enjoyed a day or two of racing, the RS:X competitors will have to wait until tomorrow at midday to officially take to the water.

This afternoon saw many of the RS:X racers take part in the practice race, a chance to find their feet and ready themselves for the competition itself. Both British competitors, Nick Dempsey and Bryony Shaw took part in their respective practice races which were held in relatively light conditions.

Nick reigned supreme, winning his practice race whilst Bryony is looking for better results ahead.

Nick Dempsey performs well in the practice race, stamping his authority on the fleet with a convincing victory.

“It was the first proper race against everybody and it was nice to win that, it was really close between Dorian (Dutch representative) and it was really great to see that I was faster than the rest of the fleet, this bodes well for the rest of the week.

The forecast is looking pretty good, a real mixed bag of conditions. We’re on the West course tomorrow which is a bit choppier, I haven’t sailed this course as much as some of the others. It’s a bit trickier than some of the other courses to sail, it caught the Star boys out yesterday, so you can definitely come unstuck there.

I’m just looking for a solid start to the event, no mistakes!”

Unfortunately, things did not go quite as well for Bryony Shaw who came of the water disappointed with her result.

“I didn’t have a very good start or speed, so my race did not go to plan, but it was nice to be out on the water. We’re out in Weymouth Bay West tomorrow which should bring some more interesting conditions.

I think everyone in the house is pretty calm and ready, hoping that everybody will have done well today so that there will be a good mood there tonight too.

I can’t wait to race on the Nothe course, this won’t be until the weekend but I know the crowds there have been immense and it helps so much to know and hear the support. We can’t get that close as there’s a boundary, but we do get fairly close to the crowds.

I had a chest infection in the spring, which recurred fairly recently, so a lot of my training has been about resting and making sure I am as fit as possible.”

Results of the practice races are not published at all, however as of tomorrow full race results will be published both here on Boards and on the RYA Team GBR website. The forecast is looking good for the week, with changeable winds, some days early in the competition should be bringing 20-25knots there should be some exciting competition in store.
