Clash of the Titans
What could shape up to be the most thrilling duel of the year takes place from 02.04.-10.04.2005 at Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhone in the south of France.
During the first stop of the ISA Speedsurfing Grand Prix Tour 2005, multiple world champion Bjorn Dunkerbeck faces his toughest opponent, the current world record holder Finian Maynard. Since the beginning of the world record attempts the long awaited final is here: who will be the fastest man on the water!
Finian Maynard, who returned the speed sailing world record back to the windsurfers just last autumn, is expected as favourite on flat water. He broke the 11 years old world record of the multi-million dollar catamaran “Yellow Pages Endeavour” on the channel especially build for that purpose in the neighboured St. Maries de la Mer.
Bjorn Dunkerbeck, who won more than 30 world champion titles in different disciplines during the last years, is expected to be favoured in rougher conditions.
It was also Dunkerbeck who directed the ISA’s attention to the more than 11 spots in Port St. Louis. With the local mayor he agreed about a contract for the next four years. The objective again: breaking the world record.
Of course there are many other participants next to the two most popular figures in the speed circus. Over 130 at the moment, more than for the last decade. There are also many amateurs beside quite a number of professionals who want to compete with the top riders. This way, a unique flair is created where professionals, amateurs and spectators will celebrate the rebirth of speed windsurfing together.
The enthusiasm is so big that even veterans like Michael Pucher and Thierry Bielak tune up their gear again. Everyone wants to show who is the king of the speed strip.
That this time the tour becomes a real world championship is guaranteed by competitors from more than 15 countries all over the world, including France, Belgium, Great Britain, Holland, Germany and also Australia and New Zealand.
Interested amateurs are still able to apply for a starting place, using the official event website www.world-speed-record.info. Additional information as the Notice of Race and up to date competitor lists are also available through the ISA’s website at www.speedsurfing.org.
