Calshot Win on Home Waters
On 19 July 24 windsurfers headed for Calshot Activities Centre for the second Team 15 event in the Southern region. Calshot Flyers, Poole Piranhas, Queen Mary Skimmers and the Oxford Zoomers all arrived to do battle. With a reputation to up-hold, Calshot Flyers rigged and launched. A light NNE allowed racing to take place just of the spit so the 3.5m class could get easy starts, the pressure was on for all competitors as the RYA were present talent spotting!
A strong incoming tide posed challenging for even the experienced of the fleet, with the first start a struggle. The 3.5m class was set an achievable beam reach course, while 4.5m, 5.5m and the 6.6m class raced around a triangle course, the start of the second race improved dramatically and most competitors sailed across within 20 seconds!
The wind increased for the afternoon to around 9knts and stronger in the gusts. The tide had now eased, this allowed for some fantastic racing with a tough battle in the 3.5m class, where Gemma Skeggs went on to claim overall class winner. In the 4.5m class Tom Brown secured an overall 2nd, in the 5.5m Max Harding gained 2nd, with George Lavender taking a well deserved 7th in the 6.6m class. Well done to all those involved in a successful day of racing.
With thanks to Calshot Activities Centre for hosting the event, Solent Sailboards for providing the prizes and a special mention for Gul, Calshot Flyers’ sponsors.
