Club Vass Slalom

Lefkada, a quintessential greek island in the south east of Athens, is a magnet for windsurfers world wide who visit it for its beach scene, and quality windsurfing conditions.

1 Hr drive from lefkas city itself sits the quiet town of Vassiliki. The months of May to September hold a pleasant surprise for windsurfers – strong and regular cross shore winds. Vassiliki beach is ranked by many as the top windsurfing spot in the country!

Sitting quietly in the centre of Vassiliki bay lies one of the best windsurf centres in the world, Club Vass Managed by Ollie Scott and the Jedi Team have lately been pushing the Slalom Scene very hard and have organized a weekly Club Vass Slalom championship run by race director Colin Whippy Dixon every wednesday week (whippy’s wednesday slalom)! Jay Haysey a Club Vass instructor and Photographer gives us the low down on what was an outstanding first round!

The sea of vassiliki was all set for the inevitable onslaught of the coming afternoon Club Vass Slalom competition, with 30+ entrants from all the centres along the bay and the wind increasing to around force 7 the competition for round one was in full swing ! !

Lining up on the start line all eyes were on local boys, Ollie Scott, Andy ‘bubble’ Chambers, Colin Dixon, Max Rowe and local boy Niko, with the wind gusting between 25 and 35 knots, choosing the correct gear for the conditions was the key to success!

Local boy Niko Dominated the start strengthening his lead on colin and ollie and the rest of the fleet, after the first gybe he pulled out a comfortable lead and never looked back. Bubble gained a few places by cutting inside of everyone at turn one and powered out in second place.

Wildwind Beach Manager little Joe fought hard closing the gap at turn 3 on Colin Whippy Dixon finishing 3rd and 4th

At gybe 3 Max Rowe executed a fine gybe on the outside of Flying fish instructor Barnsey to edge past and claim 5th

First guest back ‘Jimbo’ wins the Golden F.I.G fin!!!

Overall a lot of fun was had at full speed and everyone returned to the bar with huge smiles on their faces. If each race is as good as this one then it promises to be a great season of full power windsurfing at Club Vass.

Results:

1st Niko

2nd Bubble

3rd Joe

4th Colin Dixon

5th Max Rowe
