SEMAINE OLYMPIQUE FRANÇAISE KICKS OFF
95 men from 28 countries and 46 women from 20 countries are racing in the
Mistral One Design Fleets at the 34th edition of the Semaine Olympique
Française in Hyeres, South of France. In each case, this is the 2nd largest
number of participants out of the 10 Olympic classes racing. Wind strengths
have generally been light to medium with shifts up to 20-25°. These unsteady
weather conditions have forced the race committee to postpone starts.
Alessandra Sensini (ITA, the Sydney Gold medallist, is currently heading the
women’s fleet with Jian Yin (CHN),the 2002 Mistral Asian Champion, on equal
points followed by a strong group of 3 French contenders who are ready to
pounce on any mistakes.
In the men’s fleet which has been split into two groups, Alexandre Guyader,
France’s represntative in Sydney 2000, heads fleet one point in front of
Yuan Guo Zhou (CHN), the 2002 Mistral Asian Champion. However Nicolas Beudou
is the only other French man keeping close company in the top 5. 7 countries
are represented in the top 10. This is what racing the Mistral One Design is
all about. It does not matter whether you come from a rich country or not;
whether you were a trust fund baby or not; or whether you have a coach or
not; what matters is whether you have the talent and the tenacity to hang in
there when all around you are failing to pick the shifts. This a class for
talent not technology !
