Kicking off National Windsurfing Week, windsurfers all over Britain will be taking to the water tomorrow morning for a day’s sailing in aid of Cancer Research. Here’s the latest from Windsurfing4CancerResearch – get down to your nearest event, get on the water, and give generously…
Tomorrow (2 May 2010), over 300 windsurfers up and down the country will be on the water helping their own charity Windsurfing4CancerResearch (‘W4CR’) to increase awareness of cancer and raise money for cancer research, education and support.
W4CR was set up by windsurfer David Tuttlebee, 58, in 2008 and the charity has already donated over £20,000 to cancer-related causes. Their big fun and fundraising event this year is Sunrise Sunset 2010 on Sunday May 2nd and many of those participating are taking on tough windsurfing challenges.
Michael George from the club at Brogborough, Bedfordshire says “My target is based on my sail number K888 – to be sailing for 8 hours, 8 minutes and 8 seconds. Whatever the weather, eight hours of windsurfing in one day is going to be tough!”
David Martin plans to be on the water at Watergrove, Lancashire at both sunrise and sunset, and in between complete a mini triathlon and 6 hours of windsurfing!
Marc Timmins at Grafham Water, Cambridgeshire is hoping there’s enough wind to complete 100 miles between dawn and dusk.
Many of those participating have seen the impact of cancer on family and friends. Others are simply inspired by David Tuttlebee, himself undergoing advanced cancer treatment as he graphically describes in a regular blog (see David’s Blog on www.W4CR.org). David says “I’m very touched that so many windsurfing fundraisers are joining our big Sunrise Sunset event, many for their own personal reasons. They really do seem to realise that increasing awareness of cancer and supporting research makes W4CR a very worthwhile charity they are proud to support”.
W4CR also has support from top performers in the sport, including 2 members of the British Olympic Team, Bryony Shaw and Nick Dempsey who are both Ambassadors for W4CR. Nick says “’I am very pleased to provide my support by helping raise both awareness and the profile of W4CR. Don’t forget, get on the water for the 2010 Sunrise Sunset challenge on Sunday May 2nd”.
