Mark ‘Sparky’ Hosegood is one of the top PWA judges, and right hand man to Duncan Coombes. But, Sparky isn’t just a judge, he makes a living using his well-honed windsurfing skills.
Si Crowther caught up with Sparky in Pozo to find out more, and to pick his brain about riders to watch out for this year:
“I make a living from windsurfing, not as a professional sailor, but from a number of smaller income sources, primarily as a PWA judge and national judge.
“I love judging high level technical sailing.
“From everything I’ve learned over the years I’ve also set up Pro X-train in Tenerife, where I run a training programme for slalom sailors. I work hard on challenging sailors to develop a self analytical approach and to always look for continual improvement and the benefits.”
Riders to watch out for this year?
“Jaeger stone could throw in a few surprises. He’s been free sailing up there with the best, just before the competition.
“Obviously Ricardo (Campello), Brawzinho (Marcilio Browne) and Victor (Fernandez) are all looking shit hot too, although I would be surprised if anyone beat Koster.
“Of the Brits, (Robby) Swift is firing on all cylinders and Adam (Lewis) is looking sharp, too.
