Anthony Ruenes (F-85, Tabou/ Gaastra) falls from grace as the second round of freestyle strands halfway through due to lack of consistent wind.
On the second to last day of the Lanzarote Costa Teguise PWA Grand Slam 2005 freestyle contest, the second round single elimination was progressing well into the ladder before the wind became too inconsistent to continue.
In the heats that were completed, Germany’s Normen Gunzlein (G-186, JP/ Neil Pryde) was responsible for two sensational victories by first knocking out Anthony Ruenes (F-85, Tabou/ Gaastra), the French favourite for the overall title and then terminating Robby Swift (K-89, JP/ Neil Pryde), putting himself in the quarter finals. Ricardo Campello (V-111, JP/ Neil Pryde)’s shots at the title improved significantly by Ruenes early elimination after his disappointing 9th place in the first double elimination. Campello did his job and knocked out Tonky Frans (NB-7, F2/ Gaastra) after their heat was cancelled twice due to lack of wind. In his next heat, Campello faces his biggest rival for the title, Kauli Seadi (BRA-253, Quatro/ Naish), now that Anthony Ruenes (F-85, Tabou/ Gaastra) has been knocked out early. That clash of the titans has yet to be sailed and is on the menu for tomorrow. Other striking developments were Antxon Otaegui’s (E-169, JP/ Neil Pryde) victory over Victor Fernandez (E-42, Fanatic) and Kevin Mevissen’s (H-79, JP/ Neil Pryde) progress to the quarter final at the expense of Andre Paskowski (G-2, F2/ North).
The women’s contest has progressed as far as the quarter finals. Junko Nagoshi (J-11) meets Sarah-Quita Offringa (ARU-91, Starboard), Femke van der Valk (NB-05, F2) is up against Karin Jaggi (Z-14, F2), Silvia Alba (E-67, Tabou/ Gaastra) faces Iballa Moreno (E-63, Mistral/ North) and Astrid Muldoon (F-2, JP/ Neil Pryde) takes on Daida Moreno (E-64, Mistral/ North).
Tomorrow is the final day of the Lanzarote Costa Teguise PWA Grand Slam 2005. The forecast indicates good conditions right till the end, so log on again tomorrow for the final outcome of the 2005 PWA freestyle tour.
