NAVMAN MAUI SPEED CHALLENGE – 2nd ROUND

Maui, Hawaii (USA) — Pro sailor Anders Bringdal was in top form once again
as he beat off the opposition at round two of the Navman Maui Speed
Challenge Series, held Sunday, July 24, from Maui’s Kite Beach. And there to
help him celebrate was windsurfing legend Robby Naish, who turned up for the
fourth and final heat of the day!

The second event saw even better conditions than last week’s opener, with
lighter winds but flatter water helping to produce faster times. In the Open
class, Anders himself upped his average speed to 37.10 knots – recorded on
his Navman Sport.Tool M300 GPS unit – and his top speed to 37.70 knots,
which was almost a knot up on his nearest rival, Jacques Pauvert.

While his speed for his solitary heat was some 2 knots slower than Anders,
it didn’t stop Robby Naish having a blast in the competition. “I really
enjoyed myself; it was great to get all the boys out there,” grins Robby,
who recently moved into a new, more permanent, home on Maui’s North Shore.
“I do hope to do more rounds – I wanted to come last week and this morning
as well but I’ve been so busy with moving over here and giving up my home in
Oahu that I haven’t had the time.”

“It’s been a great day, with plenty of wind, so it’s been good to be down
here. I just grabbed an old board and old sail out of the garage and threw
it in the back of the truck to see if I could get a run with the guys. The
fact that there are so many kids doing it too is cool. Windsurfing needs
that – it has finally got its next generation of stars going, and a whole
bunch of them are here, which is great.”

“I’ve used a GPS unit before, when I was training for the World Speed
Sailing Challenge with Anders and Björn (Dunkerbeck) – and it’s definitely
the way to go. But the Navman unit seems better than the one I was training
with because you can see the readout clearly when you’re riding. It’s
killer.”

“A lot of guys are doing speedsailing worldwide – it’s the new discipline.
Everyone’s out there trying to go fast and the GPS unit is the best way to
see what’s going on. You can record your speeds, then go online and compare
with your friends and with people on the other side of the world!”

This second round of the Navman Maui Speed Challenge Series saw fewer ocean
rescues than last week – probably due to people getting their wired for
speed! But Maui Custom Kats, accompanied by Charles Oreve ‘on fins’, were
yet again on hand to offer water patrol, as well as help official cameramen
Robert Novaselic, of Maui Sports Net, and event photographer, David Blyth,
get close to the action.

Other windsurfing legends that attended the event and have expressed
interest in joining the action include Speed Sailing legend, Fred Haywood,
who missed the first two races cause he was in the South Pacific, and Matt
Schweitzer, whose families roots go back to the beginning of our sport.
With these cadre of accomplished sailors, the competition at the Maui Speed
Challenge is really starting to heat up.

Two welcome additions to the series came in the form of Sarah Nelson and
Kristen Orth, entered in Women and Juniors respectively. They joined Junior
Paulina Pease, who was the only female in last week’s opener. It was great
to see them mixing it with the boys – and proving it’s not all about brute
force and ignorance! Paulina’s average of 23.43 knots put her top of the
girls, although it was only enough to give her second place in the Juniors
division. Top place honors went to Skyler Haywood, who put in an impressive
average speed of 28.80 knots.

But one of the most impressive performances of the day came from Aaron
Constable, who won the Fun class. With a maximum speed of 32.30 knots and
average of 31.37 knots, he was up there with the other top men – not bad for
someone on rental equipment! He even beat the Event Director, Marc Lefebvre
– not that Marc was too bothered, as his top speed of 30.7 knots and 30.33
knot average was enough to put him in first place in the Men’s division.

EVENT INFORMATION:
Dates for the Navman Maui Speed Challenge Series are July 17 and 24, August
7 and 21, and September 11 and 25, to be held from Maui’s Kite Beach, near
Kanaha Beach Park. Each competitor will be provided with a Sport.Tool M300

following categories: Open Class (in which those with specialized speed
