10. Car rental:
If you get the chance (without getting your stuff stolen) leave your gear out of sight of the car rental office to avoid an on-the-spot, convenient increase in price. It doesn’t take a genius to put two and two together and realise you’re about to spend the next two months bouncing off sand dunes. Also, (almost deserving a whole point in itself) never put all your trust in the roof racks provided and to avoid losing your kit down the motorway run the straps through the car and reinforce your racks with the first broken mast you find/create.
Having said all this; travelling with kit is a fine art which only few manage to master and even then they still managed to get stitched up from time to time, so play it cool, be confident and know your stuff.
