South African Airways Kit Restrictions


If yoiu’re thinking about heading down to South Africa this winter (and a fair few Brit sailors do), then be aware that SAA is the latest airline to introduce prohibitive charges for carrying windsurfing kit. The details are reporduced below, but essentially they have changed their policy for windsurfing kit and any surf boards over 200cm, which must now go cargo. (Firearms and ammunition, however, remain unaffected and still qualify for inclusion in the free baggage allowance.)

Special Baggage Regulations are applicable on South African Airways only.



INTERNATIONAL SERVICES


For multiple airline and through-check-in on routings where other carriers are
involved, please check the rates and conditions applicable on the sectors of the
transporting carrier.


PLEASE NOTE: Sporting Equipment that is NOT specified below must be included in free baggage allowance; if exceeding, normal excess baggage rate (of 1,5% of the highest normal direct adult one way economy class fare) applies.

Bikes
On SA flights only, Bikes are free if included in the free baggage allowance.
In case of excess, following rates apply for bikes:


WC: EUR68/USD60/CAD80/ZAR250 for first and additional bike
PC:
one single charge for first and additional bike


Snow/Water Ski Equipment
One pair of skis, one pair of ski poles, boots, one snow board, one pair of standard water skis or one slalom water ski are included in the free bag allowance. In case of excess, following rates apply:


WC: the charge shall be equal to the applicable rate for 3 kg of excess baggage for first and any additional ski set.
PC:
the charge shall be 33% of the applicable excess baggage charge for the first and any additional set each.


Golfing Equipment
One golf bag including golf clubs, balls and one pair of golf shoes are included in the free baggage allowance.
Exception : On SA flights only ONE golf bag including golf clubs, balls and one pair of golf shoes not exceeding 15kg will be transported free of charge.
In case of excess, following rates apply for the first set, for any additional set, the normal excess baggage rates apply:


WC: up to 15 kg: EUR70/USD70/CAD100/ZAR350
over 15 kg: normal excess baggage charges apply.


PC: 50% of the applicable excess baggage charge for first set; for a second set normal rate will be applicable.


Surfboards
Surfboarding equipment is not included in the free baggage allowance.
Exception: On SA flights only Surfboarding equipment is transported free of charge if within the free baggage allowance.


PLEASE NOTE: Surfboards bigger than 200 cm shall be handled like a windsurfer. Following rates apply:


WC: EUR100/USD100/CAD140/ZAR450 for first and additional surfboard each.
PC:
1 surfboard not exceeding 200cm at 50% of 1 excess baggage charge, additional surfboards at the applicable excess baggage rate.


Scuba Equipment
Included in free baggage allowance; if exceeding, normal excess baggage rate applies.  PLEASE NOTE: TANK MUST BE EMPTY.


Canoes / Windsurfer and Hang-glider
To be accepted strictly as cargo.


Fishing Equipment
Included in free baggage allowance; if exceeding, normal excess baggage rate applies.


Hunting Equipment
Included in free baggage allowance; if exceeding, normal excess baggage rate applies.
From Scandinavia & Finland to South Africa on SA operating flights, additional 5kgs per passengers permitted for Hunting Equipment


Paddle Ski Equipment
Included in free baggage allowance; if exceeding, normal excess baggage rate applies.


Vaulting Poles
Vaulting poles are not included in the free baggage allowance.


WC+PC: In case of excess, EUR50/USD50/CAD70 for first and additional item.


Angling Equipment
One tackle box, haversack or anglers’ basket plus one rod, bag or box is included in the free baggage allowance. In case of excess, following rates apply:


WC: if in excess up to 15 kg (33lb), the charge shall correspond to the applicable rate of 4kg (9lb) of excess baggage; for any weight in excess of 15 kg (33lb) the normal excess baggage charges apply.
PC:
normal excess rates apply.


Firearms and Ammunition
Are included in the free baggage allowance (Subject to correct transportation and safety procedure being followed).


Pets
Pets are not included in the free baggage allowance.
The animal shall be carried in a container that meets the specification of the “IATA live animals regulations”.
Suitable containers may be purchased from selected pet shops.

Following rates apply for pets:

WC:
Normal excess baggage rates apply for all 4 crate sizes incl. the animal.
PC:  Crate 1 and 2: 1 single charge applies;
        Crate 3 and 4: 2 single charges apply;




  • Accompanied pets and container shall not be included in the free baggage allowance and normal excess baggage rates apply.
  • No pets permitted in Cabin

Exception: –
One dog for blind or deaf passenger is free.
