Cope with a crash
If you’re unfortunate enough to crash and get pinned down by a big set, like always the most important thing is to relax and take it easy. This is quite hard to do sometimes though. When I lose my gear and a set is on the horizon, generally I like to stay in the same place and turn and face the waves so I know what is coming. By doing this, it’s easy to swim under the waves when they come and avoid the rinse cycle. This way you can save your energy and it’s a lot easier to body surf a little wave than get mowed down by a set wave when going after your gear.
